About me
Hey, I’m Priyanga P Kini. I build software for a living, and I use this space to share reflections on work, life, and what I’m learning along the way.
I’m a member of nilenso, a tech cooperative where we’re trying to build a new standard for tech consulting. That turns out to be as much about how you run a company as how you write software. Over the past five years here, I have embedded within client teams, helping take projects from design to implementation.
Work
Most recently I co-developed Megasthenes, an open-source TypeScript library that lets an AI agent take plain-English questions about any codebase and answer them with sourced, evidence-backed responses.
At Porter, the logistics company, I built a Temporal-based workflow for onboarding drivers, and moved a set of high-throughput APIs off a legacy Ruby Order Management System onto Kotlin services, which came out about 3x faster. I also built a document verification pipeline on Google Gemini that reads KYC documents at roughly 90% accuracy, for a tenth of what the previous solution cost.
And before that, nearly three years at Resolve To Save Lives, on Simple, open-source software that clinicians use to manage patients with hypertension and diabetes, across India, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. I built the backend behind its analytics dashboard, covering more than 6 million patient records, and migrated product workflows onto open health standards like DHIS2 and OpenSRP. A lot of the job was convincing myself the numbers were actually right. Some projects are soul satisfying, and Simple was one of those. Software for a real cause, helping health systems keep millions of people in treatment and prevent deaths from heart disease.
Lately
I’ve been getting into AI engineering. It has opened up a lot of potential, and I am still tinkering with it to work out where the edges are.
Right now I’m writing evals for botmap, a CLI for querying open map data that’s built to be driven by LLM agents rather than by people. Most of that comes down to working out how you tell whether an agent actually got the right answer.
Other interests
Outside of work, you can catch me doing any of these. I cook, and I like trying food from different parts of the country. I play board games, chess, and table tennis. I watch movies, listen to music, and travel when I can. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with friends and family.
